Bio:Missoula, MT: My dad built some really cool high bars in our backyard that all the kids in the neighborhood used to play on. Old Joe across the street used to peer over the fence when I was on the bars and try to teach me things that he was too old to do anymore. His wife would stop her car in the alley when I was playing basketball and wouldn't leave until I made a three pointer for her. One day our neighbor Jesse tried to do a huge swinging jump thing off the highest bar and broke his arm. A few weeks later a guy in a suit came by and asked me what had happened. I was home alone so I got to be the only official witness. I always assumed that guy was from the insurance company, but now I wonder if he might have been from social services. My dad also built us a really cool hill near the high bars. It was hard to mow.

Boston, MA: When I got my wisdom teeth pulled they told me not to exercise for a few days, but I went ice skating the next day. I coughed a bunch of blood on the ice, which made some college hockey player mad. Then I met the son of Frank Zamboni, who had come by the rink to... well, to service the Zamboni.

Seattle, WA: A hill and a mountain. Water surrounding.

Cape Town, RSA: My friend Julia took a picture of Nelson Mandela's prison cell. Her camera was messed up though, so the whole roll got double exposed. Most of the pictures were ruined, but that one shot got superimposed by a shot of a group of poor black kids playing in the street. They were kind of fuzzy, ghostlike figures floating in the jail cell. It was beautiful, and would make a beautiful metaphor about the economic legacy of Apartheid. But for me it just confirmed what I've always suspected: that Nelson Mandela is neither alive nor dead, but rather a specter bridging two worlds, fighting for justice. Like Batman. But more so.

Niihama, Japan: I bought a bike that folded up to the size of a suitcase so I could take it on the train. Like many things Japanese, it was a little too small for me. I never took it on the train, and when I took the ferry to Osaka I had to choose between hauling it around for a week and paying extra baggage fees, shipping it to the states, or selling it. So I left it with a friend who sold it and sent me an envelope full of cash. Which never reached me. I could really use a few extra yen right now.

Seattle, WA: A hill and a mountain. Water surrounding. Like before. But more so.

Washington, DC: I'll tell you when I get there.
